Clarence hit the jackpot while participating in the Easter Egg Hunt. He was *so* excited; you should have seen the way his tail was twitching! After the hunt was over, he asked me how long it would be before they hatched. I didn't have the heart to tell him that they weren't *real* robin's eggs, so I was a good host and made them 'disappear' after Clarence had gone to bed. Oh, the sacrifices we have to make for our guests... ;-)
In the morning I told him that the eggs had all hatched overnight and the baby birdies had flown away. He was so heartbroken that I decided to cheer him up by letting him eat the ears off my chocolate bunny. Chocolate bunny ears always make things better, don't they?!

Cleophus continues his tour of the East coast

And just to prove we're traveling here I am in Massachusetts! Evidently, somebody leaked my itinerary to the Kennedys and ol' Ted had the welcome signs covered up with green painted sheet steel. They did not want me to know what their state bird is on account of my ferocious appetite, hunting prowess, and perhaps the bird is nearing extinction or something! HA! I know the state bird is the black-capped chickadee, and I know they taste great! I ate the last known breeding pair in North America. That's how I roll bbs.

(note from handler: Cleophus actually ate a rejected chicken wing with craft feathers. I told him that he caused the extinction of a species because he is a pain and runs off into the woods after birds. As an aside, domestic cats are not a natural part of the food chain and decimate native bird populations. Domestic travel kitties are even worse... so tragic)

Here I am in Iceland. Apparently, their entire economy was based on banking- sounds good until the global economy blows up in your litter box! I guess they turned off the lights to save some money... and went back to their traditional industry: FISHING. YUM! There are no penguins in Iceland- but they do have these cool birds with fruitloop looking beaks called puffins. I want the eat all of them but that wouldn't be showing cultural sensitivity.

My computer is fixed!

Thanks for your patience in getting pictures up everyone. I finally have my computer fixed. I did find out that what broke my computer was downloading web building software to build the TKP site. nice. I may be able to sew some killer kitties, but I not as quick with the computer action. So, your pictures will be going up, but I am still trying to find a way to edit the files for the "travelin' kitties list" without the use of the software I was using. This means I can't update your locations quite yet. I will let you know when I start updating that page.

Dancing in Versailles!

Happy New Year everyone! I hope 2009 is treating you right. It's all going well with me. I was lucky to spend some time visiting with my family and playing this lovely little toy called Wii in Chicago. I'm back in NY now and ready to get some kitties on the map. I'm sewing up a new line of Travel Kitties that will be in my shop by the end of January. I'm also drawing and writing up a new issue Temporal Millionaire for those of you who need some new reading material. I hope you have all had good times with your friends and family too. I look forward to seeing your pictures and hearing about where those Travel Kitties have taken you.

Now for an explanation of the video below... My husband found it on youtube much to my surprise. I thought it would be a great kick off to the year, and the interesting and creative work all of you are doing with your TK's. I am amazed at the number of locations the TK's have visited and hope this year brings more great pictures (and videos for that matter!). Thanks for being a part of this project with me! I crack up every time I see one of my little kitties in far off lands.

Haley Timbertoes has finally traveled! Little Mitty (I call them Mittens instead of Kittens) traveled with us to the windy city to visit the Hard Rock Cafe! We also took him to the top of the world, the Sears Tower! He had so much fun, even though it was a dreary rainy day in Chicago. We wanted to go to the zoo but in the rain, not so much fun. Next time for sure!!!
Haley will be going to Vegas soon so stay tuned!!

Dear Lisa,

I'm writing to you for advice. As you know, Zagnut has always dreamed of a life more grand than just staring out the window or chasing the dust bunnies under the couch - something my other cats quite enjoy. He seemed bored with the usual "cat activities". I tried to encourage him to broaden his horizons with learning to yodel and playing the triangle. At first I was amazed at how quickly his "musical ear" developed. Then triangle was replaced with the accordian...then the bassoon...then came the Didgeridoo. Everything was going wonderfully - everything...until he picked up a cowboy hat. We encouraged him - I admit it...We never imagined it would take him as far as it has....Zagnut is currently on tour with Country Music Artist STEVE HOLY!
My baby is traveling the world without me! Zagnut has already visited Alabama (with Blake Shelton, Brooks and Dunn and Miranda Lambert), Wisconson, California (with Sugarland), Washinton, Oregon, Arizona, Texas, Ohio, Illinios, Canada (Saskatchewan), and Florida! Today he is in Montana, tomorrow he is in Missouri and then he is headed to Fairbanks Alaska! He mentioned possibly renting an igloo and STAYING for a week or two...something about meeting a cute Eskimo kitty online. I'm sincerely concerned that my kitty wont come home. We've all heard of the awful things that happen with musicians on tour...tattoos, drunken behavior, horrible things done with M&M's - I am worried.
Any advice you could give would be appreciated. I am completely at a loss as my other cats ideas of travel are limited to the distance between the food bowl and the bed.

I am happy to report that Travel Kitty #42, Rutherford Feldspar, has just returned from his first trip! And where better to begin his journey than The Happiest Place on Earth?? That's right, Travel Kitty went to DisneyWorld! In true Berry fashion, it was jam-packed with summer fun. From the moment he first securely fastened his seat belt (unlike me, Rutherford is NOT afraid to fly) to the time we touched back down in Chicago, it's all documented. We visited the Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Hollywood Studios, and Animal Kingdom (and we were only there for 3 days!). Travel Kitty managed to get in a little r and r, too. He lounged by the pool, enjoyed a tropical drink- or two-, and mingled with the Disney characters. But best of all, he came home with the perfect Disney souvenir- his very own kitty-sized Mickey Ears.

Welcome to all my new Travel Kitty partners from Bridgehampton, NY. Aside from the massive storm that hit the area in the afternoon, I really enjoyed the day in this beautiful town on the east end of Long Island. I met some other cool crafters (Check out Charlie's and Sarah's blog to see what they're up to) and got to see a blacksmith in action. I also unveiled the newest of new in the Travel Kitty line... HUG-A-KITTIES! Yep, you guessed it, just the right size for huggin' and every bit as cute as the original TK's. I'll be putting some of these in my etsy store over the next few days along with more TK's and accessories.

On a side note, I'm doing a big overhaul on the submitted pictures and map, so don't worry if you photo disappears tonight. It'll be back up tomorrow along with some of the new travel photos I've recieved.

What's the story?

Nipper is a cheery little cat man. He was so excited to come and stay with me. He had mentioned that he has a keen interest in handmade glass and he wanted to learn more about the different venues and techniques involved in glass art. Naturally, I volunteered to help him, seeing that my Mom makes stained glass in her Etsy shop (http://www.creationsinglass.etsy.com) and I'm the founder of the Creative Glass Guild of Etsy (http://www.cgge.org). I help organize and lead a team of worldwide glass artists who sell their creations on Etsy. So, after showing Nipper around my place in the desert of Arizona, I decided he would begin a road trip touring many glass artists and their studios on his quest to learn more about the handmade glass arts!

Nipper was really fascinated by this bright stained glass desert piece. This is one of the first pieces Mom made for me as a housewarming present when we moved to Arizona. He can't wait to visit her studio in Idaho and see how she did it!

Nipper atop my most prized possession, Mom made this stained glass piece for my daughter's room. He actually threatened to smuggle it out of the house. I nearly choked on my water, because I couldn’t imagine how he could pull of such a feat!

Nipper is really such a show off. He bet me that he wouldn't get poked, but wouldn't you know it, I had to rescue him and of course I got poked! Nipper said he wanted to take along a cactus needle as his sword for protection during his journey. I told him, he would be in good hands with the rest of my CGGE buddies and wouldn't need protection!

Nipper loved that the fruits of the barrel cactus look like miniature pineapples. He really wants to visit Hawaii someday! He has a really tough hide, he said he's tough as nails and he could handle it. In fact, he said it reminded him of his acupuncture sessions! It was really hard to part with Nipper, but I promised he would learn all about the different ways to make glass art. SO, I met up with my friend and team-mate that also lives in Tucson. Judy, of desertroseartglass (http://desertroseartglass.etsy.com) was so excited to take him to her studio, I can’t wait to see the pictures!

Travel Kitties helping the homeless kids

One of our Travel Kitties has left the litter and headed to San Francisco hoping to woo the folks at the Project Night Night Silent Auction. The money raised at the auction will go towards buying blankets, stuffed animals, and books for children staying in the homeless shelters. Go little kitty, do your thing!

Celozzi Ettleson arrived safely from his travels across the pond much to the delight of H. He’s a mischievous little fellow! No sooner than he was in the house he was demanding to be taken out to be fed and watered. He decided a trip to see H’s lovely friends in Parbold, Wigan would suffice as long as he could spend an hour or so in the local hostillery. Once there he didn’t want to leave!
The following day was spent playing in some unexpected snow in his new garden. H wouldn’t let him stay out for too long though as she didn’t want a frostbitten kitten. Celozzi was surprised to find kitty foot prints in the snow, who is this mystery kitty….???

What's the story?
Am I in Africa? No - this is South America. But I was visiting friends who used to live in Africa, where they met and fell in love. They had lots of African art - here I am!

Dulce de Leche is the most delicious caramel treat made from milk. And you know how kitties love milk. My travel friend, Janina, at her Dulce in the morning with yogurt and cereal. I prefer mine straight up, right out of the jar! YUMMY!

Another declicious treat in Uruguay - ice cream! Their roots are Italian, so they have gelato style ice cream pronounced 'Helado". Wow - look at all these delicious flavors. My favorite new flavor - ice cream made with Dulce de Leche, of course!

I figured I needed to estudiar my espanol, so I sat at Las Ramblas, a walkway along the river, and read my Lilliput dictionary one day. I didn't stay long though - why? There were a lot of people walking around with their perros (dogs), so I thought it was best for me to go somewhere else.

Here I am on the drum, after seeing a show with traditional Candombe drums, Milonga, and Tango dancers. Wow, that was a fun night?

What's the story?
Tyker is a son of a bitch. I'm serious and I'm not kidding. He gets in
the car and says "Let's go to Brussels." I tell him, "I don't know
Brussels." He says, "How can you be in Belgium and not get to Belgium?"
Then he insisted. So, I drove there and got there. I told him quite
clearly that I'd take no more than three turns from the expressway. He
moaned. I drove, turned, turned, turned again. I realized I was
nowhere, and then saw a clear sign back to Mons. We turned and headed
right back.

Once we got to Mons, he was a lot better. He wanted me to drive to a
tall steeple. Note that the streets are poorly signed and I just had to
look at things above the houses and drive toward them. We got to the
steeple where there was a very large cathedral. He says, "go in, go
in." I said, "It's a Cathedral, not a Cat-Thedral, Asswhipe!"

That wasn't funny to him.

I knew he was hurt so I took him in. The place was just like the 800
year old cathedrals you've seen in books, only this one wasn't as well
maintained, which is kind of cool; lots of stuff was original, but worn.
I liked that. Kitty purred. I think he liked it too. He posed for
lots of reverent kitty photos. Ever see a kitty pray? Me neither, till
today.

Then, we left the church and turned left, walking. Suddenly the narrow
road opened up to this enormous bricked plaza with beautiful and stately
old buildings all around. Tons of seating space for dining, drinking
and smoking. We wandered, because I didn't want him to use his French.
Tyker can't take advice, and refuses to use proper pronunciation, making
us stand out every where we go. We took lots of pictures there, one
with a very special fountain. He likes fountains. He wanted to see the
famous pissing boy statue in Brussels, so this one was just going to
have to do.

Then we went to eat at a place a student recommended - an Algierian
place and got Lamb tajine. The meat was amazing. Tyker purred and said
it reminded him of some higher-end canned cat food he'd had in the past.
I asked him to stop talking and drank my beer. He lapped the water off
of the side of my glass. I was happy so I scratched his chin.

I wont look.

Today I was in a parade…a St. Patrick’s Day parade! When we got there, I really wanted to ride outside with Brogan Magoon, another new friend. Soon I realized however, that Brogan had a special tonic to keep him warm. He said, "ye will have none of it". I don’t think he liked me out there with him so I got back in the car. What could have made the day better? A Four Leaf Clover TK Hat…maybe next year. Still a good day, here are some pics.

Check out who was on site for the destruction of the Rainier Beer Cold Storage building in Seattle. This is the building that held the famous brand Rainier Beer which was originally brewed a couple miles away, the space briefly became artist spaces.The building is unsound and had to be taken down.... Sodabread had nothing to do with the demolition, or at least that's what he says.

Travel Kitty News Spreads to Germany! [UPDATED]

Travel Kitty: An interactive art project - Lisa Dalton talks about an idea that even reached Iraq Lisa M. Dalton is exploring the world - but doesn't have to step out of her door for it. The 33 year-old from Long Island/NY started an unusual interactive art project: She's making little felt cats and sells them worldwide - as ambassadors for her project "travel kitty". What exactly is the travel kitty proejct?Travel kitty is an interactive project that I started in october 2007. The participants are being asked to take one of my kitties out traveling with them and take photos of them in interesting places. Then they submit the photo and a jourrnal/narrative of the event to me and I publish it all at the travel kitty project blog. How did you come up with the idea for that? The beginning was a drawing I made: a little, skinny, pensive kitty one that I figured might have places to go to and people to see. One day I sewed my first kitty. The idea for that came up in summer of 2007 - originally with the thought in mind to teach my little son Eli some geography. He's three years old. We've got relatives all over the country which was very abstract for him. Looking at a map and telling him that we were going to send a kitty to California and then being able to show him pictures of that same kitty in California started making it more understandable for him. By now he knows a lot about the States and the continents. Why did you chose a cat as a character? Back then I was working on another project: 100 scribbely kitties - a compilation that I want to print as one big piece of work. Therefore I was constantly drawing cats. I chose cats, because we do have two cats at home which are always around when I was looking for something to draw. How many travel kitties are traveling around the world at the moment? At the moment there are 48 out on the road and I have another 15 orders from people who want a travel kitty. And where are the travel kitties located? They live all over the States, a couple in England and some in Australia. Did you have some extremely amazing reports already? One of the most interesting and unexpected reports for me is the kitty that is going to Iraq. His owners told me he would be acting a an embedded reporter for the project, which I thought was hilarious. As for the other kitties they they are taking vacations to sunny places, but also reporting in from their neighbourhoods and telling us about their place in the world. It's a unique way to explore the world from your computer. Have there been any VIP-encounters so far? I don't usually participate in the project, but I did make a special kitty to take it to the David Letterman show. I got a picture of this kitty with a man named Rupert Jee, who works at the deli next to the theatre where they film. He's on the show periodically. I'm hoping with the US presidential race in full swing that someone can get a picture with one of the candidates along the way. Did you expect the project to grow that big? No, not at all. I'm thrilled that it has... Now I even do an interview with a german paper! I look at much of what I'm doing artistically as successful if someone actually sees it. Do you own a travel kitty? No. This was a conscious choice to see where the project would go without any examples being given from me.I was pleasantly surprised when everyone started writing these hilarious narratives from their kitties perspective. It really cracks me up to open my email everyday and read the letters I get. Where's the whole project going to? Most simply, I hope that I can get people to participate in art. To look at their surroundings and life and deicde to share whatever they are doing through taking pictures, writing, making something or whatever else they come up with. I love the idea that people from such diverse lifestyles are telling the world what they are up to and are less inhibited because they are speaking for their little travel kitty. Additionally, I hope I keep getting picture submissions and that I can get pictures from all over the United States and at least one picture from every continent. I'd eventually like to show the project as an installation in art galleries with all the pictures and letters I've received.

Old Man Slowik has been resting his arthritis and enjoying the warm, 80-degree winter in Orlando. And as the 2008 Ball of Yarn dropped, he made his resolutions for the year: (1) Stretch on the cat post every morning. (2) Make it *in* the litter box each visit. And then he visited the travel agency to determine his top destinations for the near future: First, a prowl in the alleys of New York City . . . And in addition to the purr-ty geshias, he is curious to see the many rumored Maneki Neko "lucky cat" sculptures in Japan. The last call-out destination? It's Hawaii or bust before we both exhaust our nine lives!

What's the story?
Hey, world, it’s Toots Malloy (Travel Kitty #9), reporting on my fabu
holidays. The humans and I spent some time in Playa del Carmen, and I
highly recommend it! As you can see by the pictures, the trip was all
about me. (And why not! The blog isn’t called “Travel Human Project,”
is it?)

The trip started with the flight to Cancun. I was under the
impression that I got my own seat since I had a boarding pass, but I
was forced to share mine with E. Not a biggie, as she’s responsible
for all of my care and photo opportunities.

After checking in, it was time for some sun, baby! I’m a fair-skinned
TK, so I was prudent and used sunscreen. (Note to self: after
applying sunscreen, do not groom. Yuck!)

We had supper outdoors, and I was fascinated by the palm trees. They
look like giant cat toys. However, I was repeatedly assured that they
were not.

I also made friends with various creatures that visited our room. I
liked hanging out with them, but E. said they gave her the creeps.
P., the other human I live with, kept giving bigger and bigger tips
so he could see what Housekeeping would come up with next.

We went to visit some ancient ruins called Chichen Itza, which were
recently voted one of the new 7 Wonders of the World. This is what I
learned: they are very old, they are ruins, and you can’t climb on
anything. How’s a TK to stretch its legs?

As fun as this adventure was, I was ready to go home and live my
usual life, waiting for the next photo opportunity and keeping my eye
on everything.

The Travel Kitty Challenges Begin!

The Travel Kitty Challenge is a set of 12 challenges to be completed in 2008. A new challenge will be posted each month. Challenges can be completed in any order and the only due date for submissions is December 31st, 2008. If you can successfully complete all the challenges for the year you will get the password to the secret TKC shop where you can hook your kitty up with some special accessories.
This years theme:TRAVEL KITTY TOUR GUIDE
It will be your job this year to tell us about the best of the best when it comes to places that make you smile. It should be a place you would like fellow TKP participants to check out, so it will be important that you do the place justice and give us a good description, maybe a link or two, and tell us why it makes you happy to be there.
Here's your first first Travel Kitty Challenge(TKC):Where's the best place to get some food? Any place that sells something you can eat is in the running, just tell us why you love it! Oh, and take a cool picture of your kitty while you're there.

Well my hope to reach all 50 states by the end of 2007 didn't quite happen, but we have had great participation from all of you and many more people hoping to join the fun as soon as my hands crank out their kitties. We have made the move over seas and have kitties going to Australia, UK, and Iraq in the near future. Cheers to all of you for your great kitty stories and photos. Now for some of the things I had on the November to do list do:

-RSS feed...uh, still working on this. I can sew kitties but the technology stuff is a bit slower and even slower still when I'm working on my retro computer.

-Travel Kitty Challenges: The first one will be posted today. They will be monthly photo challenges. Finish all 12 TKC's and earn a little something for your kitty.

-Picture awards are still on the drawing board.

-FAQ are being worked on. Santa gave me http://www.travelkittyproject.com/ for Christmas so I'll now be able to better organize the site instead of having everything on this one page.

-New kitty goodies at Etsy: This month I'll be unveiling the special edition kitty for Valentines Day and I was lucky enough to score a Gocco machine so I'll be making some cool shirts and other printed goodies as I have time.

-Kitty production: I'm making kitties everyday, so those of you in the Kitty Queue will be notified as soon as your kitty is ready to mail out. I hope to have a page for this as well when I organize more pages for the site, then you'll be able to see where you are on the list.

I finally made it to San Jose, CA: Capital of Silicon Valley. It was quite the adventure, from getting kicked out of first class in OK, to seeing all the arches in MO, to then be inspired by all the swimming pools in the coastal desert of Southern California... Finally I'm here!

TRAVEL KITTY BEDROLL TIP: Travel Kitty bedrolls are too small to be checked as baggage. When my bedroll and I were placed on the carousel for a photo oportunity, Grand Paw only grabbed me and my little sleeping bag vanished into oblivion. Grand Meowmy threw a fit and I thought poor grandpaw was going to have an aneurism, a hairball or both at the same time! Luck was on my side, and the bedroll made it on a full trip around the luggage carousel.

Cats love sparkly things, this is true. Travel Kitties are no different. I was taken to Plaza de Cesar Chavez in Fabulous and Chic Downtown San Jose to see the lights of "Christmas in the Park." It was so exciting they could hardly keep me inside the car! Different civic and charitable organizations sponsor different trees and displays. There is lots of local flavor and variety. The people of San Jose are quite proud of it. But what is up with all the fake snow and wintery stuff when it NEVER EVER snows here? Hmmmm. Well, it is all nice anyway.

Check it out. I was plucked from the first class seat to which I had quickly become accustomed. I didn't scratch, though because the TSA guys on planes these days are jealous of my catlike grace and lithe power. They might over react and panic when they saw my strength. Besides, I'm sober now, so it was mostly just a little "misunderstanding".

GETTING BOUNCED FROM FIRST CLASS SEAT

Here I am peeping the magnificence of the American terminal at St Louis, Missouri. Are they into arches here or what? Here is the American terminal in St. Louis. Is this city all about the arches or what? I'll bet even litter boxes have dramatic arched architectural embellishments here. Car washes and vet clinics too.

After a quick stop in MO, I got to gaze upon The Mississippi River. It took a while but I finally learned to spell Mississippi. Next Stop: Anaheim, CA!

OK here I am in Anaheim. Did you know this place is naturally a desert? Why are there swimming pools everywhere? I guess water rationing is just for the poor slobs in Northern California who get all the rainfall and still have to ration because their water is sent south in the aqueduct. Go ahead and enjoy your green lawns, brimming pools, and nice long showers. Flush twice, you deserve it!

LOOKING AT THE TERMINAL IN ANAHEIM, CA

Your water bill would be about Scooglezillion Dollars if you tried to have a pool in the San Francisco Bay area. It would be cheaper to go to Napa and fill a pool with wine....ooooh....that is genius. Here I am on Grand Paw Bruce's shoulder trying to find investors for my Wine Pool Resort. Will the Humane Society complain if we put dolphins, or ducks, or something cute in there for the guests to admire? I know the animals would be very happy.
